About

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a city like few others in Europe — a place where East meets West, and history’s many layers are unmistakable in the architecture, culture and people. Nestled in a valley along the Miljacka River and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, Sarajevo retains its Ottoman roots in its old Turkish bazaar, mosques and narrow cobbled streets, alongside Austro-Hungarian grand buildings and more modern developments.

The city has endured dramatic episodes — the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand here triggered World War I, and during the Bosnian War in the 1990s, Sarajevo was besieged for nearly four years, suffering tremendous hardship.

Despite those scars, today Sarajevo pulses with life: a strong café culture, vibrant arts and film festivals (including the Sarajevo Film Festival), and a resilient spirit that honours its past while looking forward.
