Zhangmu

About

Zhangmu, also spelled Khasa, is a border town in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, situated on the banks of the Bhote Koshi River near the China–Nepal border. Located at an altitude of about 2,300 meters (7,545 feet), Zhangmu historically served as a key trading post and gateway between Tibet and Nepal, facilitating cultural and economic exchange along the ancient Himalayan trade routes. The town is known for its dramatic mountain scenery, lush river valleys, and vibrant Tibetan and Nepali cultures blending together. Before the 2015 earthquake, Zhangmu was a bustling hub for trade and tourism, with guesthouses, markets, and border services supporting travelers and traders. Its strategic location and unique cultural setting make Zhangmu an important and picturesque entry point into Tibet from the south.
