The Chapel of St Peter and St Paul, located within the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, is a beautiful example of 18th-century neoclassical design and one of London’s hidden gems. Completed in 1751, it was originally built as a place of worship for the seamen who lived at the Royal Hospital for Seamen. After a fire in 1779, the chapel was redesigned by James “Athenian” Stuart, who gave it its elegant interiors with classical columns, intricate plasterwork, and a striking pale blue and white color scheme. The highlight of the chapel is Benjamin West’s altarpiece, St Paul’s Shipwreck, which vividly depicts the saint’s survival at sea. Today, the chapel remains an active place of worship and a concert venue, admired for its serene beauty and remarkable acoustics.
