Service charge without permission

Three of us went for a birthday lunch at the weekend. We shared 6 tapas the food was very good and plentiful, although the lamb harrissa was quite hot!!
The bill was paid and a tip left on the table.
We were not happy later when we realised that a 10% service charge had been added without our agreement as well as us leaving the the tip!
Absolutely disagree with this practice definately feel the customers should be asked before a service charge is added.
