The Lit & Phil: the first 32 years

What would you see in Newcastle from the time the Lit & Phil was founded in 1793 to the opening of its home on Westgate Road in 1825? This newly devised walking tour passes the sites of where the Literary and Philosophical Society met before its permanent home. Hear stories of events that took place in these original meeting places and of other buildings we shall pass, many of which are still standing.

Route: Start outside Lit & Phil – cross to Virgin Mary Hospital gatepost – Westgate Road – Old Assembly Rooms – Fenkle Street – Low Friar Street – Newgate Street – Bigg Market – Groat Market – St Nicholas Churchyard – Collingwood Street – ends back at the Lit & Phil, with a very short inside visit.

Booking essential as places are limited.
