During the Jacobite period (1688–1746), several Scottish clans played significant roles in supporting or opposing the Jacobite uprisings. Here are some of the most famous clans:

These clans primarily supported the exiled Stuart monarchy and fought in the Jacobite risings:

- Clan MacDonald – Various branches (MacDonald of Clanranald, MacDonald of Keppoch, and MacDonnell of Glengarry) were heavily involved in the Jacobite cause.
- Clan MacGregor – Though officially outlawed, many MacGregors fought for the Jacobites, particularly under Rob Roy MacGregor.
- Clan Stewart of Appin – Strong supporters of the Jacobites, they fought at the Battle of Culloden.
- Clan Fraser of Lovat – Led by Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, who played both sides but ultimately supported the Jacobites in 1745.

- Clan Chisholm – Provided soldiers for the Jacobite army in 1715 and 1745.
Government-Supporting Clans
These clans sided with the British government, supporting the Hanoverian monarchy:
- Clan Campbell – One of the most powerful clans, they were firm supporters of the government and opposed the Jacobites.
- Clan Munro – Loyal to the Hanoverians and provided soldiers for government forces.
- Clan MacKay – Strong supporters of the British government, fighting against the Jacobites.
