During the Jacobite period (1688–1746), several Scottish clans played significant roles in supporting or opposing the Jacobite uprisings. Here are some of the most famous clans:

Jacobite-Supporting Clans

These clans primarily supported the exiled Stuart monarchy and fought in the Jacobite risings:

  1. Clan Cameron – Led by Donald Cameron of Lochiel, they were staunch Jacobites and fought in both the 1715 and 1745 uprisings.
  2. Clan MacDonald – Various branches (MacDonald of Clanranald, MacDonald of Keppoch, and MacDonnell of Glengarry) were heavily involved in the Jacobite cause.
  3. Clan MacGregor – Though officially outlawed, many MacGregors fought for the Jacobites, particularly under Rob Roy MacGregor.
  4. Clan Stewart of Appin – Strong supporters of the Jacobites, they fought at the Battle of Culloden.
  5. Clan Fraser of Lovat – Led by Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, who played both sides but ultimately supported the Jacobites in 1745.
  6. Clan MacLean – Fought in support of the Jacobites, particularly at the Battle of Killiecrankie (1689).
  7. Clan Chisholm – Provided soldiers for the Jacobite army in 1715 and 1745.

Government-Supporting Clans

These clans sided with the British government, supporting the Hanoverian monarchy:

  1. Clan Campbell – One of the most powerful clans, they were firm supporters of the government and opposed the Jacobites.
  2. Clan Munro – Loyal to the Hanoverians and provided soldiers for government forces.
  3. Clan MacKay – Strong supporters of the British government, fighting against the Jacobites.
  4. Clan Sutherland – Backed the government and opposed the Jacobite uprisings.
